wp-block-heading\">VS1 vs. VS2 diamonds<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center has-base-3-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Understand the difference between VS2 and VS1 diamonds, and when you should choose one over the other<\/h2>\n\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"gb-container gb-container-78f94212\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<p>VS1 diamonds and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringspo.com\/uk\/vs2-diamonds\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"59294\" data-lasso-id=\"207\">VS2<\/a> are grouped together in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringspo.com\/uk\/diamond-clarity-chart\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"59234\" data-lasso-id=\"208\">GIA clarity grading scale<\/a> and are covered by the same description:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Very Slightly Included (VS<sub>1<\/sub>&nbsp;and VS<sub>2<\/sub>)<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Inclusions are minor and range from difficult to somewhat easy for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s the difference between VS2 and VS1 diamonds?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main difference is in the size and location of the inclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>VS2 diamonds are more likely to have inclusions that are larger, darker and closer to the center of the diamond, where they are easier to see.<\/li><li>VS1 diamonds are more likely to be smaller and further away from the table of the diamond, which makes them more difficult to see.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When should you choose a VS1 diamond over a VS2 diamond?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two occasions when you should consider choosing a VS1 diamond over a VS2 diamond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>When the diamond has a diamond dossier, rather than a diamond report<\/li><li>When the diamond is over 2 carats<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consider a VS1 when\u2026 a diamonds has a \u2018diamond dossier\u2019, rather than a diamond report<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the examples of VS2 diamonds shown above, we used the \u2018clarity plots\u2019, which map out the inclusions in a diamond, to make it easier to spot and assess the inclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a diamond\u2019s quality graded by an independent lab like the GIA costs money, and this expense eats into the profit margins of diamonds suppliers and retailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce this, diamonds smaller than 1 carat are sometimes issued a simpler version of the diamond gradient report, known as a diamond dossier.&nbsp;A diamond dossier contains much of the same information as a diamond grading report, but doesn\u2019t include a diamond clarity chart:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ringspo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/diamond-dossier-2.jpg\" alt=\"diamond dossier 2\" class=\"wp-image-36934\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It does still list the inclusions in the \u2018clarity characteristics\u2019 section, with the most prominent inclusion listed first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, just having the inclusions listed means that it impossible to know where the inclusions are located in the diamond, unless you can see a high quality, zoomed-in image of the diamond in question or you can examine the stone under a microscope yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diamond for the above certificate is below, and you can see that the crystal inclusion that it is listed first is clearly visible near the center of the table.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ringspo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/3-0.7-VS2-with-visible-inclusion.jpg\" alt=\"3 0.7 VS2 with visible inclusion\" class=\"wp-image-36895\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>For smaller diamonds, I therefore recommend retailers, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ringspo.com\/uk\/recommends\/taylor-hart-uk-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"209\">Taylor and Hart<\/a>, who have high quality, magnified images of all their diamonds, allowing you toreview each individual diamond and verify whether or not they have prominent inclusions under the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For other retailers where high quality magnified images of each individual diamond aren\u2019t available, VS2 diamonds which only have a diamond dossier should be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consider a VS1 when\u2026 a diamond is over 2 carats<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper gb-grid-wrapper-bffa677b\">\n<div class=\"gb-grid-column gb-grid-column-a7afabc6\"><div class=\"gb-container gb-container-a7afabc6\"><div class=\"gb-inside-container\">\n\n<p>In theory, diamond clarity gradings should be the same, no matter what size or shape of diamond is being assessed. A VS2 is a VS2 is a VS2, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, there are some exceptions and the larger a VS2 diamond is, the more care has to be taken to ensure that it is eye clean.
